Ethical Origins Meet Enduring Beauty

The Kimberley Process

Blue Nile works in full compliance with the Kimberley Process, an international system created to track and certify diamonds and prove they were obtained through legitimate channels. Passed into law in 2003, the Kimberley Process requires all American diamond retailers to buy diamonds from manufacturers with the proper documentation. Today, the US Customs Service actively enforces Kimberley Process requirements on all diamonds entering American ports. We only purchase diamonds through the most respected suppliers who enforce the standards established by the Kimberley Process.

Commitment to Diamond Transparency Traceability

As a leader in fine diamond and jewelry transparency, Blue Nile continues to pursue technology and partnerships that enable greater traceability along the journey from rough stones to crafted diamonds. These efforts will ensure that our customers can track and verify a diamond from source of origin to final delivery.
by the Kimberley Process.

100% Conflict-Free Diamonds

Our diamonds are guaranteed to be 100% conflict free and we will continue to support and promote any process or partnership that upholds and improves the end-to-end diamond trade. The diamonds in our collection are sourced from around the world, including major mines in Australia, Africa and Canada. The diamond industry has a positive economic impact in many communities, including job opportunities, schooling, healthcare and improved infrastructure. Committed To Responsible Mining

We observe the highest ethical standards across our business, and we only work with partners who do the same. This commitment extends to how we source gold. We are a signatory of Earthworks’ No Dirty Gold Golden Rules, an initiative working to ensure that gold and metals come from suppliers who meet a strict criteria with regards to human rights, social issues and the environment.

What does this mean for Blue Nile? It means that we research the mining, refinement and manufacturing practices of our gold suppliers, and work with them to positively influence how gold is sourced. We are committed to increasing the use of recycled gold and secondary sources in our business, and consistently measure and establish visible benchmarks with the goal of continuous improvement.

WE ONLY PURCHASE DIAMONDS THROUGH THE MOST RESPECTED SUPPLIERS WHO ENFORCE THE STANDARDS ESTABLISHED BY THE KIMBERLEY PROCESS.

Manufacturing and Recycling

We are continuing to look for ways to improve how our operations impact our environment. Currently, all the packaging, corrugated waste and processed water we use in manufacturing is recycled.

We also separate water from solid waste which is then processed by both a local recycling facility and precious metal refinery. Products that are returned to us are disassembled–their metal and gem components are sent to our partners to be recycled.

Packaging and Delivery

Our packaging is made from responsibly-sourced materials that are 100% recyclable. Our chipboard and wrapped paper are entirely recyclable, and our packaging is constructed using eco-friendly, non-toxic glue and padded foam.

The plastic molds you’ll find in our boxes are made from recycled plastic polypropylene. We continually work to optimize our packaging sizes and delivery methods for the benefit of our customers and the environment.

Committed to Lower Energy Use

We are committed to using less energy in our daily operations. We have implemented a centralized HVAC controls system to better optimize our energy consumption. We have also converted our manufacturing facility to be lit entirely by LED.
